Grinds
Whole Bean
Best for: Coffee enthusiasts who want maximum freshness and control over their brew.
Recommended equipment: Burr grinders (manual or electric), blade grinders
Why choose whole bean: Grinding immediately before brewing preserves the coffee's aromatic oils and delivers the freshest, most flavourful cup. Whole beans also stay fresh longer in storage.
Coarse Grind
Best for: French press, cold brew, percolators, and cowboy coffee
Recommended equipment: French press, cold brew makers, percolators
Characteristics: Large, distinct particles similar to sea salt. The coarse grind allows for longer extraction times without over-extracting bitter compounds, making it ideal for immersion brewing methods.
Standard (Medium) Grind
Best for: Drip coffee makers, pour-over (Chemex, Hario V60), siphon brewers, and Aeropress
Recommended equipment: Automatic drip machines, Chemex, Hario V60, Kalita Wave, Aeropress
Characteristics: Resembles granulated sugar with a balanced texture. This versatile grind works with most home brewing methods and provides consistent extraction for a well-rounded cup.
Espresso (Fine) Grind
Best for: Espresso machines, Moka pots (stovetop espresso), and Turkish coffee
Recommended equipment: Espresso machines, Moka pots, Turkish cezve/ibrik
Characteristics: Very fine, powdery texture similar to table salt or finer. The fine grind creates the resistance needed for espresso extraction, allowing hot water under pressure to extract rich, concentrated coffee with crema.
